Effect of processing on the nutritional value of feeds Ebook
Effect of processing on the nutritional value of feeds Ebook
The term ufeed process” refers to any treatment to which source materials
for livestock feed (e.g., wheat grain) or the parts of these materials
that are to be eaten (e+g, , bran and germ ) are subjected, A source
material or part, or both, may be subjected to a series of processes.
Thus, there are such combinations as ‘‘cooked, mechanical extracted ,
dehydrated, ground.”
Some feeds are not, or may not be, commercially processed. Examples
are thresher run of grain, skimmed milk , sun-cured alfalfa, and
air-dried codfish. About 60 percent of the nonforage feeds are processed,
but most forages and roughages are not processed.
INTERNATIONAL NOMENCLATURE
In the past, there was no consistency in naming feeds, which were defined
on the basis of the entire name or product , even though some of
the parts of the names had multiple meanings. To overcome these difficulties,
a system was devised that makes it possible to know the contents
and other characteristics of a feed from its name (Harris, 1963;
Harris et ai , 1968), This system is known as the international or National
Research Council (N R C ) nomenclature. Hereafter, the system
will be referred to as the international system, since it has been adopted
by many countries.
